Both publish serious nonfiction, and both leave you owning everything you make. The difference starts with who writes the manuscript and ends with what the book does for your business.
Last verified August 9, 2026. Author.Inc prepared this comparison and is one of the two companies in it. We kept to documented facts, marked our judgment as ours, and included the cases where Scribe is the better fit.
Author.Inc was co-founded by Charlie Hoehn, a founding member of Scribe and the editor behind four New York Times bestsellers, and Miles Rote, who spent years at Scribe across the company. When Scribe's original team dispersed, we brought many of its best people here and rebuilt the process around what authors kept asking us for: a book that sounds like them, finished while the momentum is real.

In May of 2023, Scribe Media laid off roughly 90 employees on a Zoom call. Severance was not paid, healthcare ended the same day, and authors in the middle of their books lost all of the money they had paid. If they wanted to continue with their book, they had to repay the entire investment in full.
The fallout ran for years. Former employees filed a WARN Act class action that a federal court certified in December 2024. Investors sued the former CEO in Travis County court, alleging they had been fraudulently induced to invest. The company's lender foreclosed on its assets, and in August 2023 a holding company bought the brand out of the wreckage. Scribe operates today under new ownership and new leadership.
The collapse also released the best publishing talent in the category to go build. Multiple businesses trace their founding to Scribe's diaspora, and Author.Inc was the first of them to pass multimillion-dollar revenue.
We built Author.Inc around what we watched slow authors down at Scribe: manuscripts that came back sounding like someone else, timelines that outlasted the author's momentum, and covers treated as an afterthought.
Your book should sound like you. That starts with where the words come from.
When the manuscript arrives, you're reviewing your own ideas and your own expertise, organized through the structure you built with your Book Strategist. It reads at third-draft quality, because the idea testing and book-building happened before a word was drafted. A ghostwritten manuscript enters developmental editing at this point: heavy rework to make someone else's pages sound like the author. Ours skips that stage. Your words, your knowledge, nothing lost in translation.
Every square is a day and every row is a month. Both calendars run fifteen months. One of them goes quiet in month seven. The bars beneath count the hours the book takes from you.
Your book goes on sale around the time a ghostwritten first draft is finished, and it spends four to eight months in the market before theirs launches.
Author.Inc phases reflect our own schedule. Scribe's are shown as broad month ranges drawn from its stated timelines rather than a published schedule. Hour counts come from Scribe's stated two hours per week on the phone across nine to twelve months, and from our own positioning calls, two recording days, and manuscript reviews. Confirm current timelines with either company before you sign. Verified August, 2026.
Publish is Author.Inc's signature service, and Scribe Professional is the closest tier on their side. Where a row favors Scribe, it says so.
✓ marks the stronger option, or a match where both deliver the same thing. — marks an add-on rather than an inclusion.

Neither company fits if you want the cheapest possible path, or a book without your participation.

Author.Inc tests your book idea against your goals and your market before writing starts, then builds the manuscript from your own recorded words. The manuscript is complete in 1 to 3 months and the book publishes in 6 to 8 months. Scribe Media assigns a ghostwriter who writes the manuscript from recurring interview sessions, and most projects take 12 to 15 months. Both companies leave you with 100% of your rights and royalties.
Neither. You speak the book in guided recording sessions, AI organizes your recorded words into a working structure, and human editors refine the manuscript in a process built by a 4x New York Times bestselling editor. Every idea, story, and argument originates in your own recorded words.
Publish starts at $60,000 with writing, editing, design, publishing, and marketing included, and you can add on above that. Draft, the manuscript on its own, is $35,000. Scribe Media's tiers run from $56,000 to $135,000. The packages divide the work differently, so compare the written scope: who writes the manuscript, whether the idea gets tested first, the editorial passes, cover design, launch support, and access to the team.
In May 2023, Scribe Media laid off most of its staff, and its assets were sold to new ownership, which relaunched the company. Author.Inc was co-founded by Charlie Hoehn, a founding member of the original Scribe, and its team now includes Scribe's former Head of Books, a lead editor and ghostwriter, its head designer, its Director of Operations, and a lead Publishing Manager.
Author.Inc completes the manuscript in 1 to 3 months and publishes in 6 to 8 months. Scribe Media states most projects take 12 to 15 months, with a finished manuscript typically taking 9 to 12.
Yes. Author.Inc and Scribe Media both leave authors with 100% of their copyright, IP, and royalties. This standard separates professional publishing from traditional deals, where the publisher takes the copyright and most of the revenue.
Founders, CEOs, executives, and experts who want the book in their own voice, finished while their business can use it, and built to produce clients, speaking, partnerships, and media. Authors who want a traditional ghostwriter relationship over a longer timeline are better served by Scribe.
