I still would have come up with a book, but it wouldn't have been near as professional.

-Dr. gene Tynes

Dr. Gene Tynes practiced dentistry for 30 years. Then a rare blood disorder forced him to retire earlier than he expected, the kind of diagnosis that leaves many people struggling to function day to day. Gene went a different direction with it. He had always been serious about health and fitness, so he built a coaching business for Men in the final third of life, and made himself the first case study. He also founded “The Antifragile Brotherhood”, a group where Men can thrive and share their gifts. He keeps getting stronger, and that fact sits underneath everything he teaches.

The purpose behind the book

His coaching covers training and nutrition, but the part he cares about most is mindset. Specifically, he focuses on the story men tell themselves about getting older. He had watched capable men accept decline as the price of age and lose their sense of purpose the moment they retired. He wanted to hand them a different script.

One man at a time was too slow. Gene could only take on so many clients, and he had a system worth more reach than his calendar allowed. So he decided to write it down. He wanted a plain, usable field guide, not a book that talks over the reader's head and ends without giving them anything to do. He also wanted to leave something for his grandchildren, a record of how their grandfather thought about the world. So he started writing an hour every morning.

Working with Author.Inc

Around that time he met Charlie Hoehn, Author.Inc's co-founder, at an event in Austin. Neither of them planned it. They started talking, kept talking, and Gene came away with someone who could help him turn his material into an actionable book.

Gene knew the ideas, but didn’t have a feel for structure, hooks, or positioning. Charlie worked through the manuscript with him and developed it from notes toward a cohesive narrative.

The result is The Antifragile Man: A Tactical Guide to Strength That Defies Age.

How he's using it

Gene never ran a big campaign for it. He made the book part of how he shows up instead. He keeps a QR code on his phone and hands the book to men he meets at the gym or on the road. New coaching clients get a copy. He has done book signings, and the book has helped open the door to speaking engagements. It works the way a good introduction works, telling people who he is before he has to.

On working with Author.Inc, Gene says, "Charlie was very nurturing through the whole thing, and I think we developed a great friendship through the process."
